ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Julia; a wife, mother to two amazing daughters, and a follower of Christ.

I started this blog as a way to share from scratch recipes with fellow parents who have a desire to feed their families well, but don’t know where to start. It’s no secret that our food system is broken, along with almost every other system we have. But personally I find that sometimes, what I feed my children is the only thing I can control.

Choosing to cook your meals from scratch is the easiest way to cut out additives and toxins from your family’s diet, but learning new skills can be daunting; especially when the rest of your life is so busy. I get it, I’ve been there. Trying to juggle a business, kid’s schedules, time with my husband AND cooking 3 meals a day, 7 days a week felt impossible. But I’m here to tell you, it’s not. You can make food from scratch quickly, easily and on a budget!

A little bit more about how I got here.

I have a background in culinary arts and always wanted to own my own restaurant, but God had other plans and for that I’m truly grateful. In 2013 my husband and I got pregnant with our first daughter, and I knew very little about how I wanted to raise her, but one thing I did know was that how she would engage with food was a top priority. I didn’t always make homemade bread and pasta, but I did always try to cook well for my family.

In 2020, like so many other mothers, I watched the world crumble around me, and woke up to the reality that so much of what we put into our bodies is poison. At first I was overwhelmed trying to avoid seed oils and other harmful ingredients. But after relearning a few basic skills (like sourdough) I felt empowered to not only cook our meals from scratch, but also to teach our daughters how to cook from scratch as well. Now we cook 99% of our meals at home, which has not only saved us money on eating out, but has allowed us to grow closer as a family while we all spend time together in the kitchen.

For me, cooking meals at home was the gateway drug to changing many other things about our lives. For starters we took our oldest daughter out of the public school system after her first semester of kindergarten in 2020 and decided we were either going to homeschool (which we did not do well) or find an alternative. By the grace of God we found our first “micro-school,” and although it didn’t last, it opened our eyes to the reality that creating something different for our children was possible. Our children have attended micro-schools ever since and in November of 2023 God gifted me with the idea of starting “The LittleSchool Launchpad,” and out of obedience to Him, I ran with it. I now help other families remove their children from traditional school systems, in order to start their own micro-schools.

Transforming the way your kids are educated is a lot like learning to cook from scratch; it means making some changes to how you think about traditional systems, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone.

You are not alone on this journey, generations of women that came before you, prayed for you to get to this point. You can start today, and one day when your kids look back at the generational traumas and curses that you broke, they will thank you.
